This preview shows that what Mark & Jan are producing sounds even better than the original Airwolf TV sounds.

Like everyone else I can't wait to order the CD.

That's the idea.

It's to show the folks who think it would be better to release the original Airwolf score in Mono, that's they're 'WRONG'.

Saw the blog; read top-to-bottom; getting excited about the release! BTW, I ordered thru eBay an r/c AIRWOLF helicopter and posted its pic on my my page. Shipper took forever but it shipped on time; Not bad for $35; When will the 'CD' be released? I'm not a fan of IPOD but do have an mp3 CD player, thus when the CD comes out, like all classics, I'll buy.

Just had a question about the Sweet Britches final aerial - is it going to feature the hard punchy drums as heard in the episode ... always loved how "hard" the theme sounded in this one ...

Thanks

Yes.

And mixed with Ian Freebairn-Smith's other episode 'Firestorm'.

Please put extra hinges on your doors because they're going to get blown off!

And a second sneak peek track... this time a new Bonus Track 16 has been added to the Pre-Production Tracklist last week. Will keep a few folks happy to hear Ben Mufta-Kamal getting his ass kicked by Hawke and Santini...

Re: Jan's NEW Blog - 12/12/11 04:47 AM

I have to say, the wait is killing me. I have been checking the Airwolf Themes site periodically now for the past few years, just hoping to see that the new CD set was ready to go. It is now so close, and with the recently posted teasers showing Jan's superlative efforts, it is even more difficult to wait.

I wish that Mark were able to provide some teasers as well, but having read about the different production process being used on his portion, I understand that disc 2 will be a true surprise.

Having looked at the track list, I can't think of anything else I might like to have added (not that there is room for anything else at this late stage in development) but I do see virtually everything I had always wanted in Airwolf music, both the theme variations and episodic cues.

Most notably, I tam thrilled to see we will now have a definitive version of the Red Star test run (TV version, as I am a US viewer of the series, and just recently purchased the DVD release of the "movie") as I think this is one of the best versions Sly did. Why it was never used again in the regular series is beyond me, as it was simply outstanding. I cannot overstate how much I am looking forward to this track, in a clean and complete form.

I'm also relieved to see a release of the orchestral version from the hunt for Mofett from the pilot. I do kind of wish the orchestral variation from Daddy's Gone a Huntin' would have made it, as it had an extended "ending" that I thought was really good, but that is a minor quibble.

There was an MP3 of the orchestral version floating around some years ago that I have, and believe it was an early effort of Jan's. It is at a low bit rate, and the ending is cut a bit short, so it will be great to have a full fidelity/length version to listen to.

Finally, I am wondering if the 2nd season aerial from Fallen Angel/HX1 (disc 1/track 3) includes the increasingly intense synth arpeggio sequence used in the lead-up to the night time shootout in the castle courtyard in Fallen Angel. That is another cue I have been fascinated with for a very long time, and hope that it is part of the track listed on disc 1.

I think that covers it, so I will be waiting (albeit not so patiently) for the final release of this project. Many thanks to both Mark and Jan for spear-heading a project that will fulfill my long standing wish for a definitive library of Airwolf music. You both have my respect and unending admiration for making this a reality.

Thanks for comments and I'm glad you like it. Not many fans of this version I think, but it's really unique and could have certainly used more air time. Anyway, most of the music (esp. main-theme-wise) in the Pilot was not reused.

The version from DGAH is exactly the same that was used in the pilot; it has been edited (poorly!) to extend it a little bit (when Dom says "Come on kid, we're going back to the land of..." or sth like this).

What you might find interesting though is that we will include a very rare alternate version of the DGAH finale aerial, which is like an extended version of DGAH/BOTJ closing credits. Sounds good?

Yeah, that's probably mine. I did it when I was 15 years old or so using a Yamaha CBX-K1XG exclusively.

Unfortunately not. This is the exact same track that is on the Airwolf Main Themes EP.

Thanks for your comments and I beg for a little more patience! wink

Re: Jan's NEW Blog - 13/12/11 02:21 AM

Jan,

Thanks for the prompt response. I was surprised to hear that the TV version RSC test run theme was not that popular with fans of the show (if I am reading your response correctly). I have long thought this was right up with the orchestral version of the theme inasmuch as the quality of the arrangement. This one had a very unique sound to it, and I have always liked it.

I realize now that the version of the orchestral theme from DGAH is not the one I meant to reference. I was actually thinking of the one in Bite of the Jackal, right near the end of the theme where Airwolf is facing off with the Mexican General in the Jeep, there is an extended insert of nothing but the bass line and a kind of flanger or chorus effect before the theme wraps up. Always thought this few extra seconds were a nice addition, but not really that important.

On that older orchestral version you did, I have noted that during the first (descending?) bridge portion, there is a sort of brief flute apreggio or trill that is run through four times. I thought that was a nice touch, but note that it is not in the Pilot version of the theme (having just watched it recently). Was this an improvisation on your part, or was it from another episode that I do not presently recall?

Sorry to learn that the lead-up arpeggio sequence (for lack of a better term) from Fallen Angel is not in the plans, but I can live with that given the volume of other great material being recorded.

Finally, I had to comment on one of Mark's tracks on disc 2 (hope this is not an improper place to do so). I am excited to have the track titled "Blaze's Joyride", which certainly must be the sequence where Blaze flies the chopper (with Hawke backing him) and does the hammerhead stall while Mona and the production crew look on. This is a great piece of incidental music, and I never realized it was written just for the show. Always figured it was a piece of stock or licensed music from someplace.

In any case, I will remain patient - really, what choice do I have - and await the announcement of pre-orders.

Thanks again,

Kevin

Re: Jan's NEW Blog - 13/12/11 12:21 PM

The flanger/chorus drone from BOTJ that you mentioned was planned for the orchestral version, but I'm not sure if it is going to be included.

My old old orchestral version is basically based on Echos From The Past (which is slightly different from Pilot - there's a high pitch violin trill present throughout first two verses). The "flute arpeggio" (which should be clarinet/oboe anyway) is taken from Proof Through The Night finale aerial.

Re: Jan's NEW Blog - 13/12/11 03:37 PM

Hi Jan,

Listening to your work I got to say, you have done a marvelous job. I remember you guys mentioning (I could be wrong) that you basically had only your ears to rely on in order to recreate this music. If that's the case, I applaud your efforts as they seemed to have paid off. The music definitely sounds just like the original if not better, since its in stereo laugh.

You know my only wish is that you consider doing Echos aerial piece, perhaps later on, though all that you guys have done is very much appreciated smile.

Regarding music that doesn't make it into the CD, would you guys consider making it available via direct download like EP THemes? Since you invested so much into this project.

Eagerly awaiting your announcement for its (CDs) release laugh.

Best of luck!!!

Re: Jan's NEW Blog - 13/12/11 09:02 PM

Jan,

If it makes any difference at this point I will put in a resounding vote for the flanger/chorus "drone" at the end of the orchestral version. Obviously, you are the creative genius here and you get to make the call, as it should be. That said, I would really like to hear that included on the orchestral version, if it doesn't take it too far from the pilot version that is already on the track list.

Truthfully, I would even be happy with a high-bit rate MP3 copy of the old one you did years ago, as it was very good and I would buy a copy if it were made available. It wouldn't even need further refinement as far as I'm concerned.

Thank you also for pointing out that those "trills" were from PTTN. It has been quite a while since I re-watched that episode, so I had forgotten where that variation originated.

Edit: As the above poster has requested, if there are leftover tracks that do not make it to the CD set due to space constraints, I would gladly buy these on a track by track basis if they were made available for download.

I don't know how much "leftover" material you will have, or how much work those tracks might still need to be complete for distribution, but to have even 2 or 3 more that didn't make it on the CD release would be great.

I am specifically interested in the synth arpeggio sequence in Fallen Angel that is heard just before the night-time shootout in the courtyard castle. Not to be critical in the least, but I really feel that should be worked in somehow as this episode is a fan favorite, and had some of the best episode music of season 2 in my opinion.

Again though, this is just a polite suggestion as I by no means want to sound ungrateful for all the effort that has gone into this project. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Best regards,

Kevin

The S1 Synth+Orchestral theme (track 05) borrows the orchestral elements from the EFTP aerial (as it does in the "Movie" version of the Pilot), so you'll be able to hear echos (sic!) of this theme on the album.

I think you nailed the issue in your last sentence. I'm not sure yet if we want to retain the exact structure of the Pilot aerial or not. Currently I'm leaning towards "yes" - which means "no" in terms of the drone sound (on another note, I've been trying to recreate that sound for years now with little success...)

Rest assured that this track should bring a couple of surprises that should make you care less about that one particular sound smile

I don't even think that such a version is in my possesion! Anyway, we'd never dare to release it as it would sound really inferior to our current work and Mark's original AWT.

The "leftover" word is tricky. If by "leftover" you mean tracks that were produced but didn't make it to the CD because of CD capacity - there are no such tracks (at least for CD1). Ok, maybe one... wink Seriously though, we haven't discussed this yet.

Regarding Fallen Angel - well, I'm only doing the Main Theme (Kafir being a slight exception, but it does transform into that beatiful Asc. Bridge in the end).

Re: Jan's NEW Blog - 14/12/11 07:22 PM

My only non-negotiable stipulation to Jan if the final Orchestral was to be done at all has been that it contained Gabrielle's death / Hawke looking up at the tracks / Sand-dune chase going after Moffet so that part's *exactly* like the 'PILOT' episode version, as that is the one sequence that everybody, no matter how minor or major a fan of the show they are, knows.

The Orchestral will be based on that version only and I'll not be backing down on that point either. There will be some other surprises to start the theme off though as Jan has suggested. Arrangement is currently circa 5:30mins.

It will be the very final track produced for the sequel album during the winter time (being transcribed at the moment) and will have all the knowledge and experience learned from producing the rest of CD1 / CD2 thrown at it. It will also be a collaboration between the two of us. Jan will tweak and arrange and be doing the synth stuff in Poland, and I'll be arranging the high-end orchestral stuff at Einstein Studios here in Northern Ireland during the coming weeks. The plan is then that Jan flies into Northern Ireland for a long weekend and we master it together at Einstein to finish off the project. A fitting end to the project we hope.

There are no current plans to either release "AET" 2CD as a download (physical 2CD product only at the moment), nor any extra tracks (there aren't any!) as it's costing enough in time and personal finance to produce what we have and none of you lot have found Jan or me a 36-hr day on eBay yet! sleep

However, I have been toying with the idea of maybe offering one or two Main Themes Tracks (in the future) as individual downloads (like the main 2nd/3rd Season Theme) but it's only in my head being mulled over at the moment. We'll see.

Re: Jan's NEW Blog - 14/07/12 02:33 AM

Oh yeah! The music, as goes without saying, is outstanding. The new intro voice over by Lance LeGault was a very nice touch indeed. Seems like he even gave it the Sheriff's southern accent - a remarkable touch considering it was almost 30 years ago that he portrayed that role.

Mr. LeGault does have a distinctive and commanding voice, in addition to being great at portraying authority figures of questionable ethics and morals (as seen not only in Airwolf, but Magnum P.I. amongst others). He played bad guys so well, and is a very underrated actor for sure.

All this time, I never ever heard the Ian Freebairn-Smith theme underneath, used as the base for what became the 3rd Season aerial. But once he said that, and you listen to it again, you can hear it. Right there.

Wow, sounds great. Might already be in the running for "best track".

The Season 1 theme was once released on a cd (correct me if I'm wrong) and it had that guitar piece in it, but yes the tv-version didn't have it, only in the endcredits!

But Mark and Jan Can proberly better explain smile

As Claus explained it comes from a "studio" version of the theme (I'm not exactly sure how it was originally released) - it is the exact same length as the S1 opening credits and it's still mono. The only difference is the additional slap bass line that you mentioned. Since it is present in both S1 closing credits (the short one and the longer ones used for "Daddy's Gone A Hunt'n" and "Bite of the Jackal") it was a natural decision to use it in Track 12, which also further differentiates it from other tracks.
Posted By: Mark J.Cairns

Jan's NEW MP3 Teasers - 04/09/12 09:17 PM

The version Jan based that slap bass on is the original recording of an early 1st Season Opening theme on Television's Greatest Hits: VOLUME 6 "Remote Control" this album that is one of the few to ever publish original recordings of all the shows, and not [naughty-policed]-ass Daniel Caine Orchestra (Nurse... Nurse..... NURSE! where's my oxygen mask!) "crap" [insert non-family friendly, MJC potty mouth language in there].

Jim,

Probably in and around GBP30-ish (or that's what I'm aiming to keep it around) but final licensing costs (we've increased to 40+ tracks now from 35 - which is horrendously high in music terms) and production costs will dictate the final figure.

Jan's Mini-Blog - 14/11/12 10:54 PM

Jan's got an interesting little reveal to share tonight (and I realised I can't count! ;D) in a Mini-Blog tonight - http://airwolf-themes-orchestrators-notes.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/big-cd1-tracklist-changes.html
Posted By: whiskeylima5

Re: Jan's Mini-Blog - 16/11/12 12:33 AM

Indeed he did! Am a bit concerned about what track has been omitted but he states it will not be a great loss, so I will have to trust his judgement for now. I'm most interested to learn what the new additions are, as I cannot think of any other significantly different main theme variations that were not covered on the existing pre-production track list.

I was a proponent of doing the Echoes aerial theme, but understood the decision not to produce it as it was so similar to the pilot (TV) orchestral version, the latter being much more important for obvious reasons. I had also hoped for the orchestral aerial from Bite of the Jackal, as it had a different, and rather interesting (to me anyway) ending. But again, understand the decision not to take that one up for inclusion on the CD.

So, knowing that Echos is not on there (per Jan's most recent posting) and assuming BOTJ aerial isn't being added I've no idea what the bonus tracks are going to be.
