Many thanks.

Jan wanted to edit his own, but has been busy for a few weeks. I would hope in the next week or so, and have left space on that Blog to add them afterwards.

I'm sitting tapping the desk waiting too whilst my business partner, Gerry Forrester gets on with dealing with Universal and the other guys.

Meanwhile, I've plenty to do as far as website and other logistics planning.

Just got chills when listening to the teaser for "mind of the machine".

The other teasers are brilliant too (you can imagine the episode playing in your head when you hear them).

Can't wait for the CD to be released and I'm sure I'm not alone in a: wanting to thank you and Jan for doing such an amazing job, and b: being supremely jealous that you've been listening to the tracks in your car.

Mark, you should get a medal just for successfully dealing with Universal! All this incredible hard work for the love of making music from one of the great 80s TV series. Just need Streethawk next! (underrated show IMO.)

Can't wait for Airwolf II. Love the electronic and the orchestral beats. Man I wish they could have made Harlan Jenkins more of a challenge for Hawke!

Well, two out of three isn't bad!

Drs. Cairns and Szulew:

This is Senator Dietz, I'd like to congratulate you on the most spectacular music demo I've ever heard. I'd like to shake your hand.

This project started a long time ago (seems like almost as long ago as the bay of pigs), but I see the F.I.R.M.'s trust in you was well founded. Yes, really.

(cue the fiery destruction of my computers speaker system here)

In all seriousness, this is beyond any expectations I could have dreamed of when I first became obsessed with the music from Airwolf nearly 30 years ago. You two gentlemen have nailed every note of every piece of music selected for this project(at least inasmuch as can be heard in the teasers). Nothing more I can really say.

Please tell me these will be available before the end of the year, the wait is killing me.

Kevin

Truly guys, you have done some phenomenal work here! All that effort did pay off, because these sound super excellent! smile It boggles my mind that this is recreation purely by listening, Amazing! Now I only wish that this comes out by the holiday season and that I'm still alive to experience it laugh

Why is Airwolf music so addictive?! *sigh*

Zeus would be proud!
Echo everything said! I just love "Journey to Red Star " and especially the first 10 seconds of the teaser. I always loved the start of the Airwolf Pilot with that music setting the scene and Moffet and his crew stepping into Airwolf. "PILOT - Closing Theme" is also fantastic. Often hear that on series 1. Great stuff. Really great stuff and I can't wait!

Question for Jan:

On teaser track 4, Main Theme - Season 1 - opening/closing (extended) there is a portion at :37 to :42 where a 4 second piece of audio is repeated twice in sequence. This is present in the original broadcast closing credits of the episode "Bite of the Jackal", and was (in my opinion) a very poor/abrupt edit done to extend the music a few seconds to stretch it to the duration of the credits being displayed. I always found it a bit jarring, as it clearly was not how Sly recorded it, but was a post-production edit as there is a "jump" in the audio.

Did you replicate this intentionally as it is historically accurate per the original broadcast, or was it an oversight not to remove it? Given your attention to detail, I am assuming the former to be the case, but was curious about it as I was surprised to hear this "artifact" in the recording. Please note I am not criticizing your recording, just wondering if you recreated it this way to be absolutely true to the original version.

And may I thank you again for your superlative efforts. I have been playing these teasers over and over since their posting and am still amazed.

Kevin

I did this intentionally to stay faithful to the original. And I don't think it was a "poor/abrupt edit": first of all, there is no "jump" - there is an entire bar (4 beats) preserved. Secondly, while the theme melody note comes one beat early, I don't believe this was an edit, in my opinion this is how it was recorded. Why? Had this been an edit we would have heard the previous note echoing for a while (the theme is played with a sound that has a decent release time and the notes overlap). However, the note is clean - as if it was recorded this way. (I hope I'm making myself clear)

Sylvester was also surprised when he heard it in January, I'll give you that - but the previous time he's heard it was probably somewhere in 1984...

Jan,

I probably overstated the severity with regard to the quality of the edit. I re-watched the episode last night, and you are correct, there is no jump/pop or other discernible audible "defect" that can be heard.

That said, the timing is just incongruous enough to be really noticeable (to me anyway). I had remembered it being more of poor edit (in my mind) but admittedly it had been quite a while since I last viewed that episode; until last night anyway. Seeing (or rather hearing) it again refreshed my memory.

Effectively, this was an extra [un-needed?] measure of music, and perhaps it was recorded this way. It is strange in that I always thought the same source recording was used for the closing theme on Daddy's Gone A Huntin'(though the audio quality was clearly different between the two episodes)and this unusual extra measure was not present there. Guess that is why I just assumed it was an edit to lengthen the music a few seconds for some reason.

No matter, it will remain a historical curiosity now that you have incorporated it into the AET recording. I am amused to find out that it caught Sly off-guard during listening. Since it is the only version of the theme to feature this extra bit, it does stand out from any other. I suppose that got his attention, as it did mine from the first time I ever saw Bite of the Jackal.

Thanks for the clarification. I know it is a very small detail, but I find myself curious about these things for some reason.

Kevin

I'd support the claim that both episodes are using the same recording, but in my opinion the editing was done the other way round - "Bite" features the entire recording, and "Daddy's" is the edited (shortened) one.

Still, I wonder why it was dropped and why the longer version can only be heard in the aerial in alternate edit of "Daddy's". Maybe it had something with Sly's preference, as he admitted that S1 opening was not among his favorites.

Jan-

Ok, I can see that as a valid explanation. Guess we will never really know, as the passage of time has probably removed any chance of a proper recollection by anyone involved (Sly or otherwise).

While on the subject of odd one-offs, have you noted that the opening theme for S1 E1 (Daddy's Gone a Huntin') has a single low orchestral brass note right at the start, as you see Airwolf emerging from behind the sand dune? This is the only episode the feature this, and the opening theme is otherwise identical to the rest of the season 1 episodes that followed it.

I always thought this was a neat touch, but it was omitted from episode 2 (Bite of the Jackal) onward. And while mentioning that, very nearly the same brass note is heard at the end of the legendary bombing run sequence in "To Snare a Wolf" right after the end of the aerial music.

This is as Dom and others look on at the smoke and dust while standing at the control station and he proclaims "You killed String!" Always like that one too, as it was rather ominous and for a second you could almost believe Airwolf and Hawke were gone.

One more that I just noticed the other night while re-watching Bite of the Jackal as Airwolf is bearing down on the Mexican General in his truck. In addition to the strange chorused type synth sound heard a couple of times, I could swear I also faintly hear the kind of semi-random digital "arpeggio" type sound that is heard right as Moffet is about to open fire on Red Star Control in the TV version pilot.

This is the sound heard as Senator Deitz has just finished speaking and Moffet replies "Not really" followed by the close up shot of the wing mounted cannons and the alarmed expression on Arcangel and Marella's faces. It is not so easy to pick out over the rest of the music, but sure sounds like it is buried in the mix.

I guess it is just interesting to me that even nearly 30 years on, I can still pick out new details on critical listening. I have to figure if anyone else has noted these small details, it would be you and Mark.

Not only I have noted it, I have also included it in track 04! (obviously... - I assure you, hardly any variation managed to escape ;)) It's not soloed, but I'm 100% positive you'll recognize it.

One correction though: this is not an orchestral brass sound (as opposed to "To Snare a Wolf" or "Echos from the Past"), it's completely synthesized.

I don't really remember "Bite", so can you be a little more specific as to the precise moment of occurrence of these sounds? I'll check it out.

All THS bickering over Dolby Pro-Logic recording.? My DAD owns a Technics receiver, and I think a tape deck, for that matter. He (used to)& was religious @ recording music shows like Casey Kasem, American TOP 40, ect.; He was raised on the Ed Sullivan show when it aired back in the 50s. I hate not to incl. this in a post but when you're MTV, VH1 is like Coke to Darien Lake, NY; who the "f" has the copyright(s)!!!
