One of the most enjoyable weekends (ever) of my life thus far, spent at Airwolf composer SYLVESTER LEVAY's (what an amazing human being!) studios in Germany, accompanied by JAN SZULEW, and both helping out for producer & director MARTIN GRANT and his European production crew on the official Airwolf Documentary.

Jan's Blog below says it all from an Airwolf Themes' perspective. Marty will have his own post & photos on the subject.

"And a wonderful time was had by all....."

Wow, sounds like an epic time. So pleased for you all having that experience. I can only imagine the rollercoaster of emotions & sensory overload.

I'm just gutted I was 'living on the Moon' when funding for the documentary was being collected, missing out at least helping you guys a little.

Mark/Jan,

Wow, you guys are living the dream. Getting to meet the master himself. Wish I had the connections and resources to make that kind of trip, but of course you and Jan have earned it for your relentless pursuit of perfection in giving Sly's (and Ian's and Udi's) music a proper release.

I do have to ask, was the "This is some serious s#!t" accompanying the thumbs up photo a direct quote from Sylvester? If so, that is not only incredibly amusing (to me anyway), but a real endorsement of your efforts.

I think the only fan fantasy you two haven't been able to fulfill is a scenic flyover of "Valley of the Gods" in Airwolf itself. Of course, unless someone builds out a fully functional airworthy version that surpasses the mockup (very unlikely I know) that'll never happen. Would be the experience of a lifetime if it could come to pass though.

Kevin

Sylvester Levay is a happy-go-lucky man, with a great family around him and enjoying the fruits of his labours. He liked having us all there (he's never done anything like this before) and we loved being there; it was just a fan-tas-tic time for all. Sly's humour is just legendary.

"This is serious sh*t!" was said at the end with a nodding, approving smile after listening to most of Jan's tracks (with running commentary by Jan) and hearing the intricacies of its creation from Jan.

Actually the pair of them started talking techno-musico-babble and about "a half bar missing in B-flat this, and 12 notes of the D-sharp Chord of that in such and such an episode" after about five minutes and Marty and I just left them to it initially. LMAO! It was great to see and hear the banter of it actually. I took those photos of them in Jan's Blog above while they weren't looking.

I'll get a couple more photos up here when I get a chance.

Marty then took Sly through a few episode's scenes, including 'THE HUNTED' final aerial (as it's a pretty much complete one as far as the music goes, and the episode that introduced the new, warmer sound and arrangement for the theme), the PILOT, FALLEN ANGEL, and HX1 amongst others and Sly admitted that he was such a fan of the show at the time and even now after nearly 30 years the movie-quality visuals are still awesome. Then most of the Saturday was taken up by his filmed interview for Marty's official Airwolf Documentary (breaking for a spectacular lunch), with some quality time talking and swigging a few bottles of great bubbly to celebrate the day at the end.

A day beyond all expectations that I've waited nearly 30 years for.

Here's exactly how it went: we were listening to track preprod#05 (Synth + Orchestral). After the final seconds of orchestra tutti to which Sly listened with attention he made his "approve" face (really hard to describe) and shook my hand; and that was immediately followed by the thumbs up (kudos to Mark for filming this moment!) Then we were called to go for the actual interview filming, but I insisted that he stayed for additional couple of minutes and gave the Holy Grail (Orchestral Suite) a listen. When the suite finished we got up and it was at that moment that he gave me his seal of approval - "This is serious s#!t" were his exact words.

At one point we almost had an argument - Sylvester was listening to one of the main theme versions and was questioning some of the extra notes that I put in there. "But Sylvester, that was in the original version". "In one of the episodes I scored?". "Well, yes. Also - in like 90% of all episodes". It was the generic Season 2/3 closing theme... That was certainly an interesting experience! Apart from that Sly impressed me with how much he actually remembers about the music - for instance, he remembered that one of the bars in 'HX-1' aerial is 25% shorter!

I met one of my heroes in the past (Jean Michel Jarre), but this was an incomparably better experience.
