Stunned like I knew I would be.

The episodic stuff was the masterstroke of the first release.

These found a way to SOUND EVEN BETTER than Airwolf Themes, which sounded better than the originals.

Once again = the MAN.

My favorite of the new teasers is "Half-Pint", but they all sound stunning. Love the 80's ambient synth on "Santini's Millions" too. Never cared for that episode (even though I love the Dom episodes), but the music in "Santini's" was the real reason to watch and listen.

'Airwolf Main Themes EP', best album of 2009?

...oh hell yeah!

Mark,

Beautifully done! Really looking forward to the final release. I almost hate to say this, because it may sound critical (and it isn't meant to be!) but I was listening to the original AWT disc a few nights ago. After doing so, and now listing to the newest teaser tracks, I have to say the technological improvement in synth gear is evident.

I only point that out to convey that I am even more excited by the upcoming release as the sonic accuracy (quality/realism of the individual "instruments") seems like it will be even better than the previous release, as good as it was.

Of course, at the time the original AWT was mastered you had pretty much state of the art kit, and based on my reading of the site the same is true this time as well given improvements that have taken place over the interceding years.

Owning a few synths myself (mostly quasi-vintage, a few mid-2000's sampler types too) I am aware of the changes that have occurred over time. Yet to hear it in a mixed, mastered and polished production really brings it home.

In any case, you are to be congratulated on your attention to detail and drive for impeccable accuracy both in the actual musical notation as well as the instrumentation and mix-down. These first three are just excellent.

One small request: if you do post more teasers soon, please try to make Blaze's show-off sequence one of them. Really would like to hear this, as it is a piece that I have been rather obsessed with since the first time I saw the pilot episode.

Best regards,

Kevin

Thanks guys. Will have 'Blaze' Theme' teaser out real soon. Doing the synth-heavy stuff first so we can get their levels right and can work out where they'll sit best with the orchestral instruments and sections.

The toys that we've access to now are fantastic over a decade on. I've found that the original keyboards (my two Yamaha SY77's, Roland XP30 etc.) have been used a lot less than the first time, as the noiseless wonder of the modern 24-bit Pro Tools world of software synths (with no constraints any more) and software samples within the digital environment is just a joy to behold.

The original AWT was pure analogue in every way, and was recorded on Ampex 24-track tape. Digital (in its current form) was only starting out, but in the late Noughties it really matured.

There are certain things of course that no amount of digital wizardry can match (yet), so certain acoustic guitar parts (like in "CROSSOVER" and others) and of course the cello solo from "EAGLE'S/HAWKE'S THEME" and 'PROOF THROUGH THE NIGHT') just can't match the real thing... real people are doing those for me.

Would have been nice to have the 80-piece Munich Philharmonic (who did the original AWT CD2 with Sly) at my beckon-call every day for 6 months but that would make every copy of AET 2CD about $5000 bucks a pop! (what's new, I hear you say. Hahaha. Ha.). However the LA Scoring Strings and Vienna Symphony Libraries [from here on in called the "EINSTEIN ORCHESTRA" ;D) are just wonderful and the true state-of-the-art (when mixed with top studio production kit of course) and I think and hope will surprise many but the biggest orchestra snobs out there... certainly surprised me and I'm very happy with it thus far. They'll be as good as we can possibly make them.

That's awesome.

Two questions...

1) With all the technological improvements, have you ever considered fully re-recording the original AWT, making adjustments, throwing in some bonuses, as an Anniversary Deluxe re-release? I know with all of the new toys, it's gotta be tempting to go back and re-explore that first album.

2) Call me stupid, but in the open of the "Santini's Millions" clip, i'm just not placing that first Harold Faltermeyer-ish synth piece. Where is it from in the episode?

Thx again in advance for the answers Mark smile

1) Won't happen. No. I'm done after this. My name's not George Lucas.

You've NO idea the amount of time involved (and that Jan and I've had to give up from our normal lives) let alone the private and personal finance that has to be scraped together (in the midst of these times of Austerity out there for the Western World) and raised to do it all. This is it. But AET has to be done. I'm not having anyone say I was full of it all those years promising a sequel.

Bottom line: I want this sequel release to the better of the two. Think TERMINATOR and TERMINATOR 2. Which one do you want to watch more? Exactly.

2) It's when Dom loses the JetRanger's tail rotor on the movie set (See explanation on the Blog). You have to hear the SANTINI'S MILLIONS piece in context with the other 4 parts to get it. There were a few bars of transition reqd to go into this one; and I'm probably going to tweak them more anyway now I've heard them on my 4 different types of systems at home and at work.

I've tweaked two of those teasers already... just want to have another go at 'AND THEY ARE US'. Happy with the other two now.

'AIRWOLF II' will probably be the second-to-last one [the Airwolf Main Theme Orchestral from the final scene in the 'Pilot' will be last] to be "Mastered" as it's intensely complicated and is the longest track on the album made up of 4 separate sections. 'AIRWOLF II' like the rest has already been engineered (meaning all the instruments are recorded but not mixed together) in the sessions between October-December 2011.

"Mastering" is all about getting the levels of the recorded instrument tracks correct and sitting well together. It's also when other audio engineering processes are applied to each individual instrument in the track, such as Reverbs, Volume Level Automation along the timeline, Compressors, Limiters and other sonic wonders.

Doing all the pure synth tracks first so we can get a "level" of where they sit best in the mixes; then gradually do the synth/orchestrals and then the pure orchestral stuff at the end; and in that order.

We do all of this in 24-bit; which of course in the end has to be down-sampled to 16-bit for CD.

I'm back in Einstein on Wednesday & Friday nights this week (last full week of Jan'2012) doing more including a MK2 tweak to the mastering of "SEVERANCE PAY" which we did on Sunday night. You can hear a teaser for it later this week after the tweak or two. It's mighty! ;D

It's just down to when the chief engineer at Einstein can fit me in at night at the moment as he's fully booked 3 months ahead with bands, so he's doing me a huge favour trying to find any nights and weekends.

If I can get at least one track mastered and signed off every night I'm up there then happy days. I then take the track away and listen to it in the car, and on various audio systems to hear how the mix sounds, whether it's too bass-heavy or if levels in other instruments aren't correct, we tweak them for an hour the next night I'm back in. That's the joy of using the purely digital world of ProTools this time compared to setting up the mixing desk and recording from an analog 24-track Ampex tape onto DAT tape with the original Airwolf Themes.

That's the status quo at the moment. It will be done when it's done.

Jan, you are doing an amazing job!!!! thumbs

The only thing I would ask for are few more seconds for the teasers, the announcement itself takes up 5 seconds whistle.

O no matter, I wish you guys good speed. Just keep it up. I know I'm pre-ordering this laugh.
