We all appreciate Airwolf Themes and place it top of the list.

My favourite TV themes include Airwolf, Boon (Michael Elphick), Star Fleet, Street Hawk and the Theme from Prospects by Mungo Jerry (an old 1980s Isle of Dogs show starring the late great Gary Olsen).

I tend to listen to all of the above rather a lot. It would be great if Street Hawk and some of the inidental music from Prospects could be released also.

So what would be amongst your all time greatest TV soundtracks?

Mark,

I like your list. If I may single out 'Where Eagles Dare' - is this the superb Clint Eastwood film with Richard Burton? If so do you remember the great line of "Broadsword... Broadsword to Danny Boy... Come in Danny Boy"? To me this film was on a par with Ennio Morricone soundtracks in Sergio Leone films like A Fistful of Dynamite (originally Duck, You Sucker), Once Upon A Time In The West and The Good, The Bad & The Ugly. I found these soundtracks moving and very powerful.

Oh yeah... Burton and Eastwood at their best. Best "War" film, ever, and Ron Goodwin's best score (followed closely by '633 Squadron'). The latter is as iconic as Airwolf's main theme.

The reason I like 'THE WRAITH' is because of this theme song from its Closing Titles by Tim Feehan especially. It's a film that was a huge influence on my musical tastes (it came out in late 1986 when I was desperately looking for something to fill the void of 'AIRWOLF'), plus it started the careers of Charlie Sheen, Nick Cassavetes, Sherilyn Fenn and Randy Quaid:

array ( 'tag' => 'yt', 'descrip' => 'YouTube Video', 'prompt' => 'YouTube URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwvMMJyP_C0) or http://youtu.be/gwvMMJyP_C0', 'regex' => '(|.*youtu\.be/|.*v=)([a-zA-Z0-9_-]{8,12})(|&.*)', 'markup' => ' ' ));?>

Mark, yes absolutely I can fully see and appreciate that. I suppose growing up in the eighties, the first song that I ever listened to properly would have been A-Ha's Take On Me - as it's video was really good.

Also, music is something that greatly enriches life. My late Irish Uncle John Kelly was a drummer and used to compose all sorts. Alas, his musical gift did not pass down through the family to neither my brother nor I. However, I have more than made up for it though in another way, as there are probably close to 150 CDs in my room! Pride of place goes to the original Airwolf Themes CD and also to the Star Fleet CD. Next to them is a special reserved place for the Airwolf Themes Sequel CD.

Just like everyone else on here I am excited by the new Airwolf Sequel CD production.

thanks

Hi SuperWolf3000,

That is a a comprehensive list that demonstrates how important soundtracks are to the most of us that visit this site.

I have to give special praise to your selection of Baywatch - everytime I think of the theme tune I just think of hot babes and the coast!

Nice one! cool

Thanks!.

Those are just a few I have in the soundtrack box, the Baywatch soundtrack is actually quite a good little cd, bought it ages ago. Very catchy main theme song!.

Tron Legacy and Inception by far among my favourite score albums, The Last Samurai also a massive favourite.

Another great one is City Of Angels, The Crow, Kiss Of The Dragon, The Silence Of The Lambs, Hannibal, Miami Vice.

Also on the tv front, the original Miami Vice albums still pack a cool punch and also Jan Hammers Miami Vice score collection.

Just waiting for the Smallville score albums to emerge if they are ever released.

So far great selections by everyone!.

My personal favourite though is Top Gun!.

Outside of Airwolf, there is only one show that I would really like a complete soundtrack release for, and that is Chuck, which is produced by Warner Brothers for NBC in the US. It is in international syndication however.

For those unfamiliar the premise, it is a bit far fetched. In the first episode a lowly retail worker computer nerd in his mid 20's gets an email from a former college roommate and friend who is now a high-level spy for the CIA. The email contains many images encoded with the sum total of US intelligence culled from all agencies and sources.

He then is able to "recall" government secrets by seeing or hearing related things that trigger recall of pertinent information. He is overseen and assisted on missions by two government agents, one from the CIA and one from the NSA. The show is now in it's fifth and final season in the US, and I presume season 5 is now or will be soon be shown in the UK and elsewhere in Europe.

In any case, the opening theme for this show is an instrumental version of Cake's "Short Skirt, Long Jacket". That is not the piece of particular interest. Rather, the episodic cues from the show, especially the 1st and 2nd seasons were quite masterfully written and performed by Tim Jones, an American composer who does a lot of TV and movie work. Even the music from season 3 onward has been very good, though the major recurring pieces of music were all established in the first two seasons. The closing theme (used for the end credits) is also very good and has a rather James Bond type of sound to it.

There was talk of an official release of the major episodic cues, but it has never materialised. I guess this is due to declining interest in the show since the third season, as evidenced by the ratings.

I can only hope that someday us Chuck fans will get a proper soundtrack release. It seems that this show could be primed to gain interest over time (it has a similarly small but dedicated fan base) much like Airwolf has and maybe in some years that could translate into a market for a soundtrack CD.

Never heard of 'CHUCK' before. Sounds like a great premise.

Just started on '24' producers Howard Gordon & Alex Ganza's 'HOMELAND' last week for the post-'24' era. Very adult HBO in production feel and of course Sean Callery doing their soundtrack as always. It's growing on me very quickly.

Guiltiest pleasure at the minute is the all-new 'THUNDERCATS 2011' (seriously). Fantastic multi-layered reboot for the Sons... AND their Dads who remember the original in the 80s, and lots in it for all generations this time. Fantastic original story-telling and season story arc, gorgeous production design, great music. A future classic.

Mark,

You should definitely look into 'Chuck'. It is hard to categorize, as it has elements of drama, comedy, action and sci-fi. The premise is, as stated, a bit far fetched (some suspension of disbelief required) but it has been a very good show. It is probably the only other show besides Airwolf that I have ever followed religiously. I don't do a lot of TV viewing, so I have a rather short list of shows that I really enjoy, and most are of the Airwolf era (Magnum P.I., the Equalizer and Simon & Simon most notably).

Outside of those, I really enjoyed the first three seasons of Hu$tle, produced by BBC, and have those on DVD. Come to think of it, I wouldn't mind having good unedited copies of the opening and closing themes from that series as well.

Getting back to Chuck, at it's root is it a story about a hero's journey, but it has a bit of James Bond (think Roger Moore era, a bit more openly comedic than the Sean Connery films, with requisite sight gags and in-jokes) and had some great action sequences in the first 2 seasons before budget cuts started to kick in. Even then, there is great action from season 3 on, but some of the effects suffered due to less costly CGI being used.

If you get a chance to screen some episodes, I would also be interested to hear your take on the music. The recurring score pieces are an interesting mix of symphonic (all performed on synths of course), acoustic piano and guitar, and some more electronic music. It has some commonality with Airwolf in that regard as well.

The show has also had a reputation for licensing some interesting pop/rock music from lesser known "indie" bands (of the type commonly heard in older Ipod commercials) . While I am a bit old - late 30's - to be heavily interested in that type of music; the target demographic is clearly mid to late 20's, I have been surprised and impressed enough with some of it to buy the tracks I liked from Amazon.

Anyway, I did not intend to hijack this thread so I will close this line of thought.

Kevin

New Thundercats, yep totally, looking forward to gettin that one when it comes out.

Sons Of Anarchy highly recomend for new viewing to those who havent seen it.

Tried watching Chuck, but just couldnt get into it, I always wondered why that show kept going when the likes of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles was cancelled after just two seasons.

Chuck has had some big [naughty-policed] stars including Kristen Kruek from Smallville and Brandon Routh was in Chuck as well I think. I give them that, they recruited some talent for their characters, but I couldnt get into it at all.

Robocop was always a favourite of mine, havent got round to getting the soundtrack yet, I loved the original score to the 87 Robocop.

Would love to see a score album to The Wraith released, as well as Highwaymen by Mark Isham.

Hi everyone, I'm new here. To add to this discussion, I have to say "The Final Countdown" soundtrack, particularly the dogfight scene. Not exactly a TV "show", but a great soundtrack none the less.

I just seen a Youtube clip of a movie called "Deadly Encounter" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xB0O1MKXF3k

The soundtrack in the clip sounds impressive and even familiar. Mark, have you heard it?

Mark,

Glad to hear that! Looks like another we've won another convert. I think Chuck will stand as one of the most unique shows of my lifetime in concept, cast and execution. I will say that I watched it faithfully from the pilot episode on, and while I found the first 2 seasons to be the best, it was still a great show clear to the end. I miss it already.

Season 5 ended a few weeks ago in the US, and that is all there will be as NBC elected not to renew it. At least they knew in advance that season 5 would be the last, and were able to end it with a finale episode rather than an abrupt cancellation. Really, 5 seasons was a remarkable run for a show with the ratings it got from season 2 on - which is unfortunate because it deserved much better.

I'm curious to get your take on the episodic scores that were composed by Tim Jones. I thought that the music he put together was exceptionally good in almost all cases, and I pay a lot of attention to the scoring of TV and movies. Probably one of the reasons I got so caught up in Airwolf was the music, and Chuck impressed me in the same sort of way.

Of course, there was a LOT of licensed music [indie rock/pop and such] as well, and I was surprised how much of it I enjoyed as well, not usually my taste in music. I wish Warner Brothers would issue a soundtrack of Tim Jones work for the series, but so far there has been no movement on this.

Best regards,

Kevin
