The stock 222a was used purely from a cost perspective as it would have cost a lot of money to recreate another set of add-ons like the original Airwolf, especially if the newer, more up-to-date Redwolf would probably have had different add-ons. They probably thought the minimalist approach of a stock 222a would suffice as a doppelganger wolf in sheep's clothing.

She was played by Shannen Doherty (from 'Beverly Hills 90210' fame).

Absolutely. 'Airwolf' cost Universal over $65+million dollars at the time and it took well over a decade for them to get that money back (i.e. they lost money on it at the time). Only nowadays are they making profit on it, so it has always been treated as a long-term investment.

Yep, saw him recently in an episode of 'The Mentalist'. Instantly recognisable, and playing a slightly mad character.

With regards to costs, back in the 80's you had to be creative with your productions, the likes of Airwolf, Knight Rider, Street Hawk, even Blue Thunder the movie etc, are all the last of their breed.

They had to shoot as much as possible for real and then for some of the more complicated, time consuming and money saving shots use some nice model miniture work.

Today its all computers.

You'll never see Airwolf done today the way it was originally back in the 80's.

As in would it be cheaper to do it today?, well you can argue yes or no on that one. The cost of making films and shows have gone up.

Best example I can give you, Airwolf would be done like the recent Knight Rider. A blend of a machine with cgi elements but in Airwolf's case I think they'd push more the cgi direction to make it cheaper. Who Knows.

Good to see Wings Hauser still around, great actor.

The biggest cost nowadays would simply be the INSURANCE to do all those aerial stunts.

After 'The Twilight Zone' accident, plus our own loss of life on 'NATURAL BORN", McKernan Snr has stated that insurance costs from 1987 onwards (when Jetcopters was down-sized dramatically) went through the roof.

I'd say the one thing that would be so much better now would be the upgraded Green screen "poor man's process" as far as a sound-stage mock-up was concerned. One could have all these wonderful things happening outside the windows now with none of the playback issues and timing worries like they had in the 80s.

I've always thought, if the series were to be given a "new lease of life", Universal should test the water with a mini-series first, much like what they did with "GALACTICA"; determine just how costly it would actually be, how it would fare being written with specific budget dictations, and whether a (potential) weekly series would work, with such dictations. And no, I don't mean Season 4-type cuts.

They clearly know it would have to be financed quite generously, but what I mean is whether certain writers and producers could make it work as a "serial" (such as "24"), so that the expensive aerials wouldn't be required for each episode, and have those "copter-less" episodes substituted by superb writing (e.g. 'SEVERANCE PAY', but without resorting stock footage recycling). No idea whether it would or could work, but it isn't impossible I don't think.

It took FOX two whole seasons to invest significantly in "24", to afford the frequent on-camera use of aircraft it became known for. But "AIRWOLF" was of course an aircraft series ("the title belongs to a helicopter of all things!" is a remark I'm sure one or two executives at the studio have made), so Universal would have no choice but to begin financing the show with a large-enough budget from the start; not a year or two later. I'm not thinking as big-budget as the original, or as low as Season 4, but rather in-between.

Yep very true.

The mini series approach isnt a bad way to go, it worked for Galactica, but then its purely a cgi show with props for the actors to interact with (ie the fighters). So it's budget would be different to Airwolf in a way.

As pointed out, the title of the show reflects the actual key star which happens to be a machine and its a helicopter, one of the more expensive things to maintain, use and operate on a daily basis.

The original cost a clean fortune just to get it off the ground. The FAA was involved with every step of the Bell 222 make-over, so no doubt if this were to be done for real again they would have to be brought in again and rightly so, but Im sure laws have changed and restrictions just as tight if not tighter than they were back in the 80's so that might have an impact on the idea of a heli format in general, maybe not much but certinely might have a role in how a new one would be structured.

A mini-series would really be our only chance of testing the water as you put it Marty, think I even mentioned it over at airwolf.tv sometime ago of a Galactica type deal, great minds think alike my friend!.

My additional idea then a series but done like Sons Of Anarchy, 12-13 episodes a season, that way the budget is spread evenly and the writers, producers, everyone can have some real creative juice flowing putting 100% into each one, that way each episode counts and you dont run out of steam and wont be as draining on your budget, schedule and wont burn out ideas.

Each episode having that movie feel to it, as your able to put allot more into each episode instead of trying to do a 22 episode run.

Me personally Sons Of Anarchy have it down perfect, each episode packs amazing writing, outstanding performances, gritty dark atmosphere, beautifully shot and brilliantly made, they do a shorter episode run and each episode counts. Airwolf today would suit that type of thing.

That way you can spread the machines better and have more constructed story arcs that could centre around the characters more if the lead ship isnt needed as much.

My two cents anyway folkes.

A lot of modern shows only do, what would have been called, a half season back in the old days, especially shows on HBO like 'ENTOURAGE', or even the massive hit 'MAD MEN' (my current fav).

There's a part of me that would love to see a new Airwolf show, but realistically, I'm just not sure how that'd be possible. Besides, audiences are far more sophisticated today than they were back then, and the things they used to get away with in the 80s would get the production team crucified alive today.

That being said, I think the String, Dom, Caitlin, and Archangel characters would still have merit today, and it's really *them* that I would be more interested in seeing anyhow.

As far as "hardware" is concerned, I'd say we should take an MRH-90 and use it as the body, but I'd be cool with giving it the same paint job as the ol' 222 had. Oh, to have Andrew Probert as a concept designer on the show again with an MRH-90 (and other things) to work with... Mmmm, now that would be cool.

Mr. Probert is to concept art what James Earl Jones is to voice work: it doesn't matter what they're working with, you know it's going to turn out amazing.

Example: James Earl Jones reads "The Raven".
