Yeah. What LittleWolf01 said.

Oh, and incidentally, during this "ugly" period, I find the "ubbthreads-dark" theme isn't quite as garish as the default lighter one.

Every one of the EP pieces was performed magnificently! My absolute favorite would have to be the 2nd/3rd Season Closing Titles... the lead-in drum beats followed by the rest of the theme being pieced together... well, let's just say I love it when artists do that.

My only nitpick (a small one) was on the 1st Season track, where we hear the drum hits that lead into the main theme, before the finale, and out of the main theme (ala "Mad Over Miami"); I could hear them, but I felt they weren't brought out enough, as in comparison to the ones heard on the "Mad Over Miami" Cuban attack run. Not trying to bash Mark or Jan for their hard and great work at all.

Just thought I'd add my two cents!

P.S. What are the chances for a full render of the 3rd Season Theme, as heard in "Kingdom Come" or "The Deadly Circle," for the 2010/2011 release?

Again, great job, guys! Can't wait for Airwolf Extended Themes!

-Adam

Mark and Jan, you guys have outdone yourselves yet again. Simply marvelous thumbs.

My favorite has to be the first season synth. music. It's uplifting.

By the way guys, I noticed that you guys chose to compose lot of season 2/3 themes? How so? I get they are great but season 1 too has lots of great tunes. What about the orchestral from episodes like Echoes From The Past or Pilot itself?

Many thanks guys. Jan really nailed everything as far as I'm concerned and the credit has to go to him.

Airwolf04 / Wolf873 -- pretty much everything listed in your posts will be addressed in the later, CD release of 'AIRWOLF EXTENDED THEMES'.

Gotcha beat. I already did this with my iPod. Driving from A to B hasn't been this much fun or quite this stylish in a while.

OMFG... nod

I'm so excited listening to the tracks through my earphones at work, that I think I've just let a little bit of wee out... blush

The 1st Season Main Theme Extended has SERIOUSLY taken me right back to the age of 11 when I sat slack jawed staring at the TV every Friday night watching this magnificent sleek metallic beauty rise out of her wintry hiding place, howling and screaming as she glides majestically through the snowy terrain.

Awesome, gentlemen, truly awesome and entirely as I expected it to be - PERFECT.

thanks thanks thanks

Enjoying it so far, i do however have to make note of something in the first track, at around 4:45 when the music enters its "da da da daaa" section first time around it plays 4 times then 3 times. Just sounds slightly strange like an extra slice has been added and not noticed.

gerv, if you have your Airwolf Season 1 DVDs handy check out "Proof Through the Night" finale aerial. That's where I got this extra chunk from!

Well, that's what I was trying to accomplish. I'm glad it works out!

Season 1 synth theme has always been my personal favorite and it took a lot of time to produce a version that was acceptable... to me!

Not that you said that, maybe it should be a little more prominent, but to excuse myself let me just point out that if you compare the dynamics of "Mad Over Miami" and "Fight Like a Dove" synth themes, they sound completely different anyway and yet it is the same theme.

Glad you like it. My long-time favorite as well.

Well, Season 2 had the highest number of different variations of the theme and there will be even more of them on Airwolf Extended Themes.

Well, they're great too wink

Seriously though, orchestral versions are not easy to deal with. I either need a real (read: expensive) orchestra or sophisticated (read: expensive) hardware/software synthesizers. I won't give a "yes" or "no" for the time being wink

The theme id love to hear is from the episode (can't remember its name right now) where near the end airwolf is in the back of a cargo plane, falls out parachutes etc and engages migs. That theme to me really captures all of what airwolf is about.

.

You'll also hear the orchestral theme (which is what Jan is referring to in the topic above) can also be heard prominently in the "PILOT" and other 1st Season eps. Sly Levay even brought it back again (albeit it mixed with synth) in the 3rd Season "EAGLES" episode.

Just bought the EP, and lemme just say... Jan/Mark in 2012!

Seriously amazing. That Seasons 2/3 Extended theme has to be one of the best recorded under the "Airwolf" name ever. They sound better than the originals. I know I sound like a broken record, but with this absolutely BEYOND FLAWLESS production, my brains melt at the prospect of a Season 4 main theme on the AET album.

Something tells me that sequel album in 2010/11, once we all hear it, we probably can call it a day and die. It won't get any better. grin

Just some questions...

What exactly are the origins of the cut 2, the 'Season 2 Minimalist' theme? I was a bit confused going in, I was expecting the "Sweet Britches" aerial.

Also, what are the origins of the final cut, just 'Airwolf Minimalist Main Theme'? Did this appear in the show, or is it Jan doing his own thang?

Anyways, amazing work guys, give yourself a pat on the back, amazing job, keep it up, and you've made the wait for 'Airwolf Extended Themes' just that much harder. Mission accomplished.

clap

Not sure if I get your question correctly, but if you're asking which episodes it's from, then the answer is "Fallen Angel" (the part when Cait picks something up on radar) and from 02:22 - "HX1" (finale aerial). The outro (last 20 seconds or so) is pretty much my own thing.

Yes, it most certainly did!

00:00-00:23 - this is from "Mind of the Machine" (arrival at the test site; "That's it?" / "Not exactly downtown USA" dialog)
00:23-01:18 - either "Mind of the Machine" or "Mad Over Miami" (the "Chasing Hurricanes" scene)
01:18-03:23 - Red Star Test Run (this is from the "Movie" version of the Pilot, not the CBS TV Pilot that is on your Season 1 DVDs!)
03:23-06:12 - from "Inn at the End of the Road" (the canyon chase)

Hope this helps.

question are you planning a version of the season 2-3 theme that is like the one you can download off of airwolf uk which is 3:15 seconds or something more than that for the cd

Greatly helps, and answers the questions. Thank you.

I'm hoping there's a complete breakdown of this stuff, track by track (unless obviously identifiable) on the liner notes for AET. Just for quick reference.

Thx on the heads up for the 'Movie version' Red Star stuff on Main Theme Minimalist... I had no clue. As an American, yes i'm used to the CBS TV pilot movie. cool

Yup, of all the themes its one that stands out a lot. Just a bugger that without paying for an orchestra its something that won't happen. frown

Bought and downloaded the tracks yesterday. Listening to them now on my iPod (new bluetooth headphones arrived today, yay!).

Fantastic new tracks. I'm listening to the original 2CD on my iPod quite frequently and these are excellent additions.

Can't wait for more!

Technically, it has already been done with Sly Levay's own, re-done orchestration for Track 01 on the original AWT Special Bonus CD2. Originally my brief to him was to re-do the Sand-dune chase in the 'Pilot' but he insisted he wanted to make it bigger and do more with it. Tsk. Original Composers! Get bored too easily ;D

Financially, the figures just don't add up to do just one track with an orchestra. We'd never make the money back on the cost.

I'd discussed it at length with Udi Harpaz personally (the show's other composer) last year in London, but no matter what way we looked at it, it just wouldn't work, nor would it be the same. If wink the "sand dune chase" orchestral happens (it would be the last one to be tackled to finish off the project) with the AET 2CD, it'll be Jan who will try it. But only if we both feel it's good enough will it be released.

Fantastic new tracks. I'm listening to the original 2CD on my iPod quite frequently and these are excellent additions.

Can't wait for more!

Many thanks for your support again, G80s. It's appreciated.

Loving these tracks on the new EP,

I was wondering Mark is there anywhere where we can get a downloadable cover for the soundtrack,I've seen the one in the downloads section but it has a 'sample' watermark running through it,
I'd love to make a cover for this to put them into my collection next to my Airwolf themes set

Kindest regards
Tys

I'll obviously not put the high-res version on-line for the pirates to make use of. wink

But the following should be good enough for iTunes/iPod or a decent ink-jet of it:

Thanks for all the replies Jan and Mark, much appreciated nod.

I just figured out that the first season synth theme could be edited to produce at least 3 different variations, at least I think so, which are:

1. Airwolf: Startup theme
2. Airwolf: President's Mach Plus Ride
3. Mad Over Miami Battle (Obvious)

To Snare A Wolf is in there too but for some reason it sounds incomplete.

Nope, defo Track 23 (which was Track 1 on CD2) was Sly's new orchestral interpretation of the Main Theme. Yes, I realise it's different to the pure orchestral used in Moffet's sand dune chase after Gabrielle died, but that's what he wished to do.

What's wrong with Sly's Season 1 Main Theme on AWT?

I thought it was pretty damn amazing.

I'm hoping there's a complete breakdown of this stuff, track by track (unless obviously identifiable) on the liner notes for AET. Just for quick reference.

Here's a breakdown of track 3 (I can't get used to that number by the way, our internal numbering was slightly different!):

00:00 - 01:08 - "Bite of the Jackal", tail rotor gets hit
01:09 - 02:42 - Red Star Test Run "movie" version (excerpt)
02:43 - 04:12 - "Mad Over Miami"/"Fight Like a Dove" mid-aerial
04:13 - 04:48 - "Bite of the Jackal", take-off after fixing the tail rotor
04:49 - 05:25 - "To Snare a Wolf", Bogard's theme ("silver chase")
05:26 - 06:40 - "Mad Over Miami"/"Fight Like a Dove" mid-aerial

Thx on the heads up for the 'Movie version' Red Star stuff on Main Theme Minimalist... I had no clue. As an American, yes i'm used to the CBS TV pilot movie. cool

Well, so am I. I learned about the different score in the "movie" version from Mark.

Without getting into "technical details" let me just say that it appears to me that he forgot how the sequence should go (understandable after all those years) and didn't spend enough time to research it. Otherwise, it's fine, I liked his new take on the Ascending Bridge.

By the way, during the part just before the finale verse (ala Daddy's Gone a Hunt'n closing credits) what instrument plays the lead? I can't put my finger on it - sometimes it feels like a sax, sometimes like an overdriven guitar?

I, too, found the Ascending Bridge to be that recording's best quality.

After hearing the Bite of the Jackal closing credits for the first time, I always thought saxaphone was the perfect instrument for Airwolf's underlying band part. After hearing its use by the Munich Philharmonic, I changed my mind.

Nothing really wrong with it, im just looking for something that sounds more like the ending battle sequence from echoes from the past.

Way ahead of you smile Not only I made the edits, I also merged them with the original video. In addition to the mentioned there's also the String vs Winchester scene from "Mind of the Machine".

Not sure what you mean about "To Snare a Wolf" though.

Guy's .... Mark and Jan ,
I have to say a big " Well done and Thankyou very much upon the " Airwolf Themes EP "
I downloaded them this morning and have played them roughly for 6 hours now .... driving the wife MAD !
These four remixes are ..... for want of better words ... BRILLIANT !

I really look forward to the upcoming " Airwolf Themes Extended " and will be queing for one straight away .

I was really impressed with the video link put together for this too , with Mark and the Mock up ( and Marks little spin ) I think the whole thing was done with style , and also stands a true testiment to what is .... Airwolf .

Once again Thankyou guys .... 10/10 !

"poised in the air, wavering ever so slightly from side to side, the aircraft almost seemed to be a living entity unto itself."

Oh yeah Mind of the Machine Simulated battle theme is in there as well. O & when I mentioned To Snare A Wolf, I meant the part after String says "Wish me Luck", that tune that plays when he engages turbos doesn't seem to be in the track. Or maybe I can't seem to get a fix on it crazy

O and could you possibly post those edited themes with videos, at least to those who purchased the tracks via pm maybe? I would really really love to see them edited by a pro. grin

I think you can apply that first one to Proof Through The Night where Hawke takes out the chopper with Turbos only.

Speaking of 'Proof Through the Night', you'll also notice that Jan incorporated the sort of double-on-itself verse from mid-way through that episode, when Rostoff says to Hawke: "That's why I left the serum I stole with my wife", cut to Jan (Michael-Vincent), dissolve to Airwolf taking-off, and it's on that copter shot you hear it.

Jan's obviously decided to incorporate that instead in Track 01, at 04:49, followed by the quick-cut to another verse repeat that I'm recognising from the Finale Aerial of 'Short Walk to Freedom'. Love it. cool

Well, yes, but as I said it occurs also in the PTTN finale aerial and it's a better reference, as it's also the final verse there.

i think the sand dune chase reworked would be a major coup for the airwolf second soundtrack also maybe a rework on the airwolf theme you can get off the airwolf knightrider cd which is almost 8 minutes long

God know's what name Sylvester Levay, the composer, gave that ending piece from 'THE TRUTH ABOUT HOLLY' a name. Probably "Holly's Farewell", but it was he who composed that particular cue, along with all the other cues heard during that episode.

I've not had access to those particular Music Cue sheets so don't know what Sly Levay named them unfortunately.

Say Mark, I may have already asked this but, would be looking into doing that little piece of Shadow of Hawke trailer music? But more importantly are you going to do that piece that plays out in Bite of the Jackal when Hawke is repairing Airwolf? It sounds like some variation of Eagle's Serenade and it's an excellent piece if I may say so.

Hi Mark, thats the first time I post here and first of all I want to thank you for your incredible job on Airwolf themes, its always a pleasure to listen to it ! Well, some of us talked about THE TRUTH ABOUT HOLLY episode, especially the main theme (like we can listen at the end of the episode). My question is : is there any possibility to find that piece, or the other main theme (that at the beginning and the middle of the episode, when Caitlin has a problem with the helicopter) in the new album ?

I know youll only put the good stuff and not the short cues, but its a question that I have for a long time. THE TRUTH ABOUT HOLLY music episode sounds great for me (with the brillant use of the synth) so I hope to listen to it in Airwolf Themes 2 ! Thanks for answering Mark, if you can, and thank you for your job again.

Best regards from France

Which ones do you have? Could you upload them here or they contractually privileged? Would be very interested to work out what cues were omitted, and which weren't.

I just purchased the EP tracks today and I have to say, they sound incredible!

There are some moments where Track 1 (2nd-3rd) seems sequenced wrong but I see that others have pointed out that it was done that way somewhere in the episodes.

However, from 0:25 to 0:34, it seems completely out of sequence with the drum? Or is it meant to be that way?

Keep up the great work!!!

Meant to be that way. Listen very carefully to the piece it's based on; the Pre-Title teaser trailer from 'FALLEN ANGEL'.

Which ones? I'd be happy to explain the origins. Everything is done on purpose.

Marty explained it correctly - it was sequenced like that in the Fallen Angel pre-episode teaser-trailer.

personally id like to hear a very big version of the sand dune chase as its done in the pilot movie and cbs versions but i think the pilot version should be more orchestral and the cbs version should be more snyth and the pilot version should be longer since its well the movie for certain parts of it.

Where's the Airwolf Extended Themes sequel sitting at right now? Close, far away, 2011, 2012...

What's going on Mark? Thanks for any insight man.

It's... aye... yuh know... pfff... getting there!

I'm currently working on two tracks simultaneously - "AND THEY ARE US" suite and the helicopter pursuit from "NATURAL BORN".

Jan's working on two tracks too... "SWEET BRITCHES / FIRESTORM" Extended Aerial and '3rd SEASON' Extended Aerial. They're awesome so far. He's nailed it.

...and that's all the titbits I'm going to tell - for the mo.

Somebody... PLEASE... find me (us) a 36-hr day on eBay! I'm willing to pay the asking price.

Mark,

Can you tell us about how much is completed right now? Like 50% or 90% etc.
Looking forward to the sequel.

Jan's much further on than I am, but all moving along nicely now after a lot of technical hitches and much hair-pulling over the past few years with my kit etc.

We still want to get it out by the end of the year.

Thanks for the update Mark. You've always been a good man about that.

Jan's talent is just sick. The guy plays Sylvester Levay tracks better than Levay did in the mid-80's. Although you Mark have a great ability to re-create the actual scores.

Really looking forward to it.

One question I would like to ask though, and hopefully you can answer. I noticed that Jan's tracks on the EP, seemed to be mixed quite differently in 2009, versus the mixing on the 1999 AT release and even the remastered release of AT.

I was wondering what the suites, you're actual work will 'sound' like to the ears, versus how the suites sounded on the 1999 original soundtrack? Similar? Or are you taking a different approach to the sound and feel because we're now in 2011, versus 1999?

Thx

Well Jan's tracks are all purely digital from the start and he has also chosen a sublime musicality to his mixing too, which has been run past Jean Michel Jarre's engineer and he agreed it was the direction to take as well. Many current engineers like to "EQ" it to hell and back which is why everything sounds LOUD on many modern CDs / music tracks.

The original AWT was recorded on 1" analogue reel tape (I still have the original 3 Ampex reels - somewhere) because current-type digital music kit was in its infancy in 1998 (Pentium 3 was the top level of computing power then) and Einstein Studios was still mainly analogue.

This time however, my stuff will all be mastered with the latest ProTools gear on top-end, tricked-out Apple MacPro at Einstein Studios.

My MIDI kit and way of creating the episodic stuff is still identical to the mid-90s -- I was still using my original Apple PowerMac 7600 G3/120 until 6 weeks ago -- yes, my old 16-year-old music sequencer Mac still works [although I'd tricked it out to the max since the 1990s over the years] -- get what you pay for with Apple folks! I just brought home my faster-to-startup, old 1999-era PowerMac G4/1.4Ghz from work's "chuck it!" room and loaded in MOTU FreeStyle 2 sequencer to it, to do all the MIDI sequencing donkey work for the rest of the year. All works great, plus swanky new big LCD monitor from the older 7600 to see it all on (which wouldn't have existed on original set-up back in the day), which I find hilarious that a 16-year-old computer can even RUN the graphics power needed for an LCD two decades later! This is the 5th monitor I've had on this kit since getting it all. But again, that's paying the money for Apple back in the day when it was expensive compared to PCs. The stuff's bullet-proof.

I didn't want to upset the status quo of my professional Graphics/Video studio set-up which has all the latest MacPro gear too and have left my attic music studio in the era, as I know my way around it so well). Any sounds I don't have or can't produce will be done at Einstein Studios in final mastering/engineering, although my original Yamaha SY77s (two of them now) all use the same banks of my own Airwolf-era, vintage synth sounds that I used on the original.

So, the difference between Jan and me is this...

Jan will be able to let you guys hear Teaser Samples before 'Airwolf Extended Themes' release. Plus he can use original LinnDrum samples with his kit to match the original drums perfectly.

I, on the other hand, won't be able to until it's all taken to Einstein later in the year and engineered in final mastering/engineering. Plus LinnDrum samples will have to be added in post-production. But it depends on the track and what it is of course. It's the Airwolf Main Theme that really needs the original LinnDrum rather than the episodic stuff overall, so we'll see.

Two different approaches but that's the way it is.

Answer your question?

Thanks for the comments. Well, my "sickness" sometimes manifests itself as not being satisfied with anything that I produce; it's both a gift and a curse.

Anyway, I think the best way to sum it up is that the original AWT sounds different compared to AMT simply because they were produced by two different audio engineers. And I certainly wouldn't call myself a "pro" wink

I think that approaches to AWT and AMT/AET were different; AMT/AET focuses on "replicating" the originals and that's why the tracks released on AMT have a narrow stereo field (as the originals were in mono). The new tracks I'm working on (that Mark mentioned) will have a wider stereo field... wait til you hear the S3 theme. I'd love to give you a 5 second sneak peak of the bassline, but you'll have to ask Mark to let me wink

If I might intrude here into the conversation...

I know I'm looking forward to it. It can be very frustrating, of course, for us listeners who eagerly await your efforts, but a little perspective here is also useful.

If one takes a look at the gap between albums with top professional, multi-million dollar bands, it's clearly not a matter of how big-time an operation one is. Some things just simply take as long as they take.

Bet a month's worth of sundaes that Mark and Jan are even more anxious to get it out than we are (if this is possible) to get our hands on it.

Well, case in point Mike...

Jan's "curse" is why I brought him on-board as I recognised the symptoms of the incurable sickness early on. Although he's got it even worse than me! Seriously.

Anyway, I was out with the boys last Friday night and even though I'd had great "craic" and enjoyed the night off (first in weeks) I kept thinking... 'I could have been at the keyboards for 4 hours tonight!'

I'm going home from work (and life) tonight to see my missus for an hour or two and then I'll sit on the keyboards to the early hours of the morning. Have to cram it into to Friday nights, Saturdays and Sunday evenings from now until its release. The rest of the week is dead for me with real-life work and 18-hr days etc., although I'm listening to and enveloping myself in the original tracks over and over and over in the car (just got a brand new Mazda with a 10-speaker Bose system so I could hear every nuance) on the way into and from work every day, so I suppose I am doing a bit every day from that perspective. e.g. average day -- I'm driving with Cruise Control on or sitting at traffic lights straining to hear little bits of this and that and trying to discern if it's one/two players/sounds doing a bass line or a harmony or a horn section, and then I'm sitting in work with a music sequence drumming around my head ('Airwolf II' -- especially Harlan showing off Redwolf -- has been droning around my head all this week for example -- even at 3am in the morning). zzzzzzzzzzzz

I know Jan's in a similar-ish scenario with all the above. That's just the way it is.

Not yet, he's still tweaking it... again for the 28th time. Damn that perfectionist curse basher

(I was quite happy with the entire finished pre-engineered MK3 that I've been playing in my car for 2 years) - it'll be like the 3rd Season aerials from 'THE DEADLY CIRCLE' or 'DAY OF JEOPARDY'... to me they're by far the two best and most satisfying aerials of the 3rd Season (the arty shots in THE DEADLY CIRCLE especially are top-drawer, movie-quality especially --- Harvey Laidman, Ron Stein and McKernan Jnr did an *awesome* Directing job on that episode)

I would totally agree. Probably the 'big moments' of Season 3. The only other one I would throw on their is the score on the aerial to WHERE HAVE ALL THE CHILDREN GONE?, it wasn't the main theme, but it held the same power and was very memorable.

'Airwolf Main Themes EP', best album of 2009?

...oh hell yeah!

Hi Mark and Jan, and congrats for your work! Brilliant!

I would love to know what synths are used by Jan for the EP, I love the texture in them.

Thanks and once again, bravo ! smile

Thank you for your kind words. Jan has done a brilliant job with it IMHO.

We're mainly both "Yamaha Men". They have made the synths/keyboards of choice for the past 3 decades...

Jan mostly uses:
- Yamaha Motif XS6 workstation (with sampled LinnDrum)
- Yamaha AN1x

Also aided somewhat by:
- Yamaha TG77 module
- Yamaha CBX-K1XG
- Roland Super JD990
- Roland D50

Sequenced & Mastered in
- SONAR 7 PE

I use:
- 2 x Yamaha SY77
- plus lots of other kit at Einstein Studios, Antrim at the mastering stages later in 2011

Sequenced in:
- MOTU FreeStyle 2.1
