Well Jan's tracks are all purely digital from the start and he has also chosen a sublime musicality to his mixing too, which has been run past Jean Michel Jarre's engineer and he agreed it was the direction to take as well. Many current engineers like to "EQ" it to hell and back which is why everything sounds LOUD on many modern CDs / music tracks.

The original AWT was recorded on 1" analogue reel tape (I still have the original 3 Ampex reels - somewhere) because current-type digital music kit was in its infancy in 1998 (Pentium 3 was the top level of computing power then) and Einstein Studios was still mainly analogue.

This time however, my stuff will all be mastered with the latest ProTools gear on top-end, tricked-out Apple MacPro at Einstein Studios.

My MIDI kit and way of creating the episodic stuff is still identical to the mid-90s -- I was still using my original Apple PowerMac 7600 G3/120 until 6 weeks ago -- yes, my old 16-year-old music sequencer Mac still works [although I'd tricked it out to the max since the 1990s over the years] -- get what you pay for with Apple folks! I just brought home my faster-to-startup, old 1999-era PowerMac G4/1.4Ghz from work's "chuck it!" room and loaded in MOTU FreeStyle 2 sequencer to it, to do all the MIDI sequencing donkey work for the rest of the year. All works great, plus swanky new big LCD monitor from the older 7600 to see it all on (which wouldn't have existed on original set-up back in the day), which I find hilarious that a 16-year-old computer can even RUN the graphics power needed for an LCD two decades later! This is the 5th monitor I've had on this kit since getting it all. But again, that's paying the money for Apple back in the day when it was expensive compared to PCs. The stuff's bullet-proof.

I didn't want to upset the status quo of my professional Graphics/Video studio set-up which has all the latest MacPro gear too and have left my attic music studio in the era, as I know my way around it so well). Any sounds I don't have or can't produce will be done at Einstein Studios in final mastering/engineering, although my original Yamaha SY77s (two of them now) all use the same banks of my own Airwolf-era, vintage synth sounds that I used on the original.

So, the difference between Jan and me is this...

Jan will be able to let you guys hear Teaser Samples before 'Airwolf Extended Themes' release. Plus he can use original LinnDrum samples with his kit to match the original drums perfectly.

I, on the other hand, won't be able to until it's all taken to Einstein later in the year and engineered in final mastering/engineering. Plus LinnDrum samples will have to be added in post-production. But it depends on the track and what it is of course. It's the Airwolf Main Theme that really needs the original LinnDrum rather than the episodic stuff overall, so we'll see.

Two different approaches but that's the way it is.

Answer your question?

Thanks for the comments. Well, my "sickness" sometimes manifests itself as not being satisfied with anything that I produce; it's both a gift and a curse.

Anyway, I think the best way to sum it up is that the original AWT sounds different compared to AMT simply because they were produced by two different audio engineers. And I certainly wouldn't call myself a "pro" wink

I think that approaches to AWT and AMT/AET were different; AMT/AET focuses on "replicating" the originals and that's why the tracks released on AMT have a narrow stereo field (as the originals were in mono). The new tracks I'm working on (that Mark mentioned) will have a wider stereo field... wait til you hear the S3 theme. I'd love to give you a 5 second sneak peak of the bassline, but you'll have to ask Mark to let me wink

If I might intrude here into the conversation...

I know I'm looking forward to it. It can be very frustrating, of course, for us listeners who eagerly await your efforts, but a little perspective here is also useful.

If one takes a look at the gap between albums with top professional, multi-million dollar bands, it's clearly not a matter of how big-time an operation one is. Some things just simply take as long as they take.

Bet a month's worth of sundaes that Mark and Jan are even more anxious to get it out than we are (if this is possible) to get our hands on it.

Well, case in point Mike...

Jan's "curse" is why I brought him on-board as I recognised the symptoms of the incurable sickness early on. Although he's got it even worse than me! Seriously.

Anyway, I was out with the boys last Friday night and even though I'd had great "craic" and enjoyed the night off (first in weeks) I kept thinking... 'I could have been at the keyboards for 4 hours tonight!'

I'm going home from work (and life) tonight to see my missus for an hour or two and then I'll sit on the keyboards to the early hours of the morning. Have to cram it into to Friday nights, Saturdays and Sunday evenings from now until its release. The rest of the week is dead for me with real-life work and 18-hr days etc., although I'm listening to and enveloping myself in the original tracks over and over and over in the car (just got a brand new Mazda with a 10-speaker Bose system so I could hear every nuance) on the way into and from work every day, so I suppose I am doing a bit every day from that perspective. e.g. average day -- I'm driving with Cruise Control on or sitting at traffic lights straining to hear little bits of this and that and trying to discern if it's one/two players/sounds doing a bass line or a harmony or a horn section, and then I'm sitting in work with a music sequence drumming around my head ('Airwolf II' -- especially Harlan showing off Redwolf -- has been droning around my head all this week for example -- even at 3am in the morning). zzzzzzzzzzzz

I know Jan's in a similar-ish scenario with all the above. That's just the way it is.

Not yet, he's still tweaking it... again for the 28th time. Damn that perfectionist curse basher

(I was quite happy with the entire finished pre-engineered MK3 that I've been playing in my car for 2 years) - it'll be like the 3rd Season aerials from 'THE DEADLY CIRCLE' or 'DAY OF JEOPARDY'... to me they're by far the two best and most satisfying aerials of the 3rd Season (the arty shots in THE DEADLY CIRCLE especially are top-drawer, movie-quality especially --- Harvey Laidman, Ron Stein and McKernan Jnr did an *awesome* Directing job on that episode)

No, I'm not! I consider the bass line done. The theme sound - that's another story.

I would totally agree. Probably the 'big moments' of Season 3. The only other one I would throw on their is the score on the aerial to WHERE HAVE ALL THE CHILDREN GONE?, it wasn't the main theme, but it held the same power and was very memorable.

Hi Mark and Jan, and congrats for your work! Brilliant!

I would love to know what synths are used by Jan for the EP, I love the texture in them.

Thanks and once again, bravo ! smile

Thank you for your kind words. Jan has done a brilliant job with it IMHO.

We're mainly both "Yamaha Men". They have made the synths/keyboards of choice for the past 3 decades...

Jan mostly uses:
- Yamaha Motif XS6 workstation (with sampled LinnDrum)
- Yamaha AN1x

Also aided somewhat by:
- Yamaha TG77 module
- Yamaha CBX-K1XG
- Roland Super JD990
- Roland D50

Sequenced & Mastered in
- SONAR 7 PE

I use:
- 2 x Yamaha SY77
- plus lots of other kit at Einstein Studios, Antrim at the mastering stages later in 2011

Sequenced in:
- MOTU FreeStyle 2.1
